  • Q&A #42: Downtime with Rabbeim, God Creating Evil, What Was Given at Sinai, When to Share Learning
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 38 minutesSynopsis: This morning (3/20/25) we had a rare (this year) Q&A! We discussed the following questions: (1) How should a person use their outside-of-yeshiva "downtime" with their rabbeim: to talk about Torah or about other things? (2) What do we make of the tension between acknowledging God as the cause of evil and the Rambam's position in the Moreh that God doesn't directly cause evil? (3) What, exactly, was given at Sinai? (4) Which principles or factors should determine when, how, and whether to share what we've learned with other people?-----מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות תלמוד תורה - הקדמה; א:יברמב"ם - משנה תורה: ספר המדע, הלכות דעות - הקדמה; ו:א-ב-----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by my friend, Rabbi Dr. Elie Feder. • Ralbag's Lessons from Megilas Esther: Part 4 (#36-40)
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 23 minutesSynopsis: Tonight (3/6/25), in lieu of our Thursday night Pirkei Avos shiur for women, we continued learning the Ralbag's toalos ("beneficial lessons") on Megilas Esther, picking up were we left off last year, at the beginning of Chapter 6. Unlike last year, in which we JUST read the Ralbag, we decided to read and discuss the pesukim this year before learning the toeles. This resulted in a slower pace, but (I hope!) a richer learning experience. We only got through five toalos, but we delved into them deeper than we did last year, and came away with some really sharp insights into the Megilah and some nice practical applications.-----מקורות:Neima Novetsky's translation of Megillas Esther on AlHaTorah.orgרלב"ג - אסתר פרק ו, תועלות ל"ה-מרד"ק - תהלים קטז:ידרש"י - אסתר ו:טErica Brown, "Esther: Power, Fate, and Fragility in Exile"-----The Torah content for this week has been sponsored by Rifka Kaplan-Peck in tribute to the Bibas family. • Emulating a Vengeful God: ve'Halachta bi'Drachav and E-l Nekamos
Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 52 minutesSynopsis: Thoughts of vengeance have been on the minds of Jews worldwide since October 7th. In less than two weeks, we’ll celebrate Purim — a holiday in which vengeance is a dominant theme. We are commanded to emulate Hashem’s ways, and He is explicitly described as "vengeful" throughout Tanach. Are we meant to emulate Him in this regard? How does this align with the Torah’s halachic and ethical stance on revenge? How does it fit into the Torah's broader philosophy of ethics? In this morning's YBT Sunday shiur (3/2/25), we explore an approach developed by Ibn Kaspi, rooted in the statements of Chazal and the writings of the Rambam. (Goodman)Goldmintz – The Rav on Tefillah: An Anthology of Teachings by Rabbi Joseph B. O Machshavah Lab

My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss. My goal as a Torah educator is not merely to teach my students my OWN hashkafah. Rather, my goal is to equip them with the foundations, the methodological training, and the tools which will enable them to arrive at their OWN understanding of Judaism and cultivate their OWN relationship with Hashem and His Torah. This podcast is devoted to the shiurim I give which are geared specifically towards that end. As such, the range of topics covered here will be diverse. There will be shiurim on Jewish philosophy, Chumash methodology, aggadic midrashim, maybe even some non-Jewish philosophy as well. Merriam-Webster defines "laboratory" as a place providing opportunity for experimentation, observation, or practice in a field of study. I call this podcast "Machshavah Lab" because this is where we will conduct Torah "experiments" by exploring questions, texts, and ideas in an effort to develop our machshavah in a "hands on," exploratory, firsthand manner.
